Patient Journey
From referral to recovery.
A structured, transparent pathway designed to ensure every patient receives timely, expert care at every stage.
The Pathway
Eight steps to recovery
Each stage is designed to ensure safety, clarity and the best possible outcomes for every patient.
01
Referral & Triage
Referrals are received via the 24/7 cardiac line, secure form or outpatient clinic. Urgency is classified within one working hour — time-critical cases are routed immediately to the on-call team.
02
Imaging & Assessment
Echocardiography, CT coronary angiography, blood work and anaesthetic review confirm the diagnosis and assess operability. Results are compiled for MDT discussion.
03
Multidisciplinary Review
Cardiologists, surgeons, anaesthetists and perfusionists review the case and agree the optimal surgical plan. The referring physician is notified of the decision.
04
Pre-Operative Preparation
Patient education, consent, medication optimisation and pre-operative optimisation. Blood products are cross-matched and theatre time confirmed.
05
Surgery
The procedure is performed in a dedicated cardiac theatre by a consultant-led team with cardiopulmonary bypass, intra-operative monitoring and perfusion support.
06
ICU Recovery
Post-operative care in the cardiac ICU with haemodynamic monitoring, ventilator weaning, pain management and early mobilisation. Family updates are provided regularly.
07
Ward-Based Recovery
Transfer from ICU to the cardiac ward once stable. Continued monitoring, physiotherapy, wound care and patient education for discharge.
08
Discharge & Follow-Up
Structured discharge plan including medication, wound care, activity restrictions and follow-up appointments. Outpatient clinic review at 2 weeks, 6 weeks and 3 months.

- Maintain a healthy diet and stay as active as possible.
- Arrange support at home for the first 4–6 weeks after surgery.
- Bring all current medications and imaging results to your pre-operative assessment.
After Surgery
Recovery and discharge
Your recovery is a partnership between you and our team. Here's what to expect after your procedure.
Post-operative guidance
- Keep your wound clean and dry for the first 7 days.
- Take prescribed medications exactly as directed.
